Have you ever heard of Hanbok? Hanbok is the traditional attire of Korea, characterized by beautiful colors and elegant curves. It is based on the traditional five colors inspired by nature (blue, red, yellow, white, and black) and is decorated with various colors and patterns depending on the season or occasion. That might be why hanbok is loved worldwide for its graceful yet unique charm. 🌈
These days, there are many fusion hanboks that maintain traditional beauty while adding a modern touch. K-pop idols often wear these fusion hanboks on stage, showcasing the allure of hanbok to the world. The vibrant colors and soft lines of the designs enhance the atmosphere of the performances, creating sparkling scenes where tradition and modernity blend beautifully. ✨ This time, I’ve gathered some stages where hanbok was worn during performances. Enjoy! 🎶

In K-pop, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that VIXX's "Shangri-La" at the 2017 GayoDaejejun opened the door to an Eastern beauty concept.❤️🔥 VIXX has been known for their conceptual styles since debut, incorporating elements like harnesses, chokers, and colored lenses. At the time, their bold choices raised some eyebrows, but they were truly a groundbreaking group that paved the way for everything idols do today. While there had been some Eastern-inspired concepts in K-pop before this stage, VIXX's "Shangri-La" was incredibly fresh and innovative for its time. The performance featured hanbok costumes, fan props, choreography, a stage background supporting lyrics solely in Korean, makeup, and live singing—all perfectly executed.👏 In fact, the fandom community was buzzing right after this stage! VIXX appeared in black hanbok with white accents, and the choreography utilizing fans, combined with the dreamy stage production, captured everyone’s attention. The performance felt like stepping into a piece of Eastern art, making it even more beautiful and mystical. Thanks to this, many fans who witnessed the stage found themselves even more enchanted by VIXX's charm. ✨ |

오마이걸(OH MY GIRL) - Destiny(러블리즈 원곡) |
OhMyGirl's "Destiny" received rave reviews for surpassing the original!🤩
This song, originally by Lovelyz, was performed during the 2019 Mnet program "Queendom." On stage, OhMyGirl donned outfits reminiscent of the cheolrik (a type of hanbok with separate top and bottom pieces, typically worn by military officials during the Joseon Dynasty) and incorporated white fabric into their performance.🩶 "Destiny" features poignant lyrics that harmonize with Lovelyz's signature bright atmosphere. OhMyGirl reinterpreted the song with an arrangement that emphasizes the Korean feel🇰🇷, focusing more on the lyrics to express the emotional depth. The choreography using white fabric added a wistful touch, making it feel like they truly reconstructed the original in their own unique style. The entire performance felt like a poem, leaving a lasting impression that resonated deeply, rather than just being a simple stage act. 🌟 |

세븐틴(Seventeen) - 손오공(Super) |
SEVENTEEN made a stunning appearance in traditional hanbok reinterpreted with a modern twist during their "Super" stage. The deep navy outfits adorned with gold accents perfectly matched the song's intense energy. Beyond the costumes, there were other noteworthy Korean elements to observe; member Jeonghan wore a binyeo (a traditional hairpin used to secure an updo) while performing, earning cheers from the fans. 😊 In particular, "Super" showcased a grand performance with many dancers under the concept of "Mega Crew."‼️ The sight of everyone on stage dressed in hanbok and performing in perfect synchronization was nothing short of spectacular. SEVENTEEN’s "Super" stage, radiating an Eastern energy reminiscent of martial arts heroes, heated up the K-pop scene last year and undeniably marked a new milestone in K-pop performances! |

BTS appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" in the U.S.! To celebrate their comeback, a special week called "BTS Week" was organized, which garnered quite a bit of attention.👀 During this "BTS Week," BTS performed in hanbok at Gyeongbokgung Palace. The hanbok worn by the members featured a design that was both traditional and modernly reinterpreted, making the stage not just a performance but also a meaningful opportunity to showcase the beauty of Korean traditional culture and heritage.🇰🇷 Gyeongbokgung, visible in the background, is a representative royal palace of Korea located in the heart of Seoul, where one can experience the essence of traditional Korean architecture. It is a must-visit place for understanding Korean culture and history, featuring beautiful palatial structures adorned with traditional tiled roofs and vibrant dancheong.❤️💚 By performing in hanbok against the historic backdrop of Gyeongbokgung, BTS spread the charm and tradition of Korea to the world through K-pop, which likely sparked greater interest among many international fans in Korean culture and history! 🌏✨ |

뉴진스(Newjeans) - Cool with you |
This past May, to celebrate the renaming of Korea's "cultural heritage" to "national heritage," NewJeans performed at the "2024 Korea On Stage - New Generation".
On stage, they showcased a total of four songs, including " Cool with You," which gained significant attention, especially the performance in front of Geunjeongjeon while wearing hanbok.🇰🇷 The hanbok, along with the accessories and beoseon (traditional socks made to keep feet warm and stylish), was so beautiful that it evoked images of fairies.🧚 The designer who created this hanbok shared some impressive insights about the production process. This hanbok was made by " Seodamhwa," the same place that collaborated with NewJeans for their hanbok photoshoot. The designer's reflections on the work were quite striking❤️🔥:
👤: Famous idols from large agencies have all worn hanbok at least once, and because they appear in magazines and articles, hanbok tends to be treated as merely an event or performance. As a result, even the artists themselves might not fully understand what aspect of hanbok they are embodying when they wear it. Thus, idol sponsorships or requests are often similar. The outfits need to allow for comfortable movement, avoid looking outdated, and be trendy. Exposed shoulders can facilitate ease of movement, and I'd prefer noticeable elements in shorter designs.
However, NewJeans was different.
👤: During the previous photoshoot, we agreed that as long as the colors made the members look beautiful, that was enough. We exchanged photos throughout the process to learn about the type of hanbok, the significance of the accessories, and the motifs behind the skirts. We checked for any issues but didn't interfere with the design. When producing the stage outfits this time, I had my own criteria: I wanted to create a layered skirt that wouldn’t hinder movement while covering the knees as much as possible, and the NewJeans styling team reflected this well. |

What do you think? I believe the designer's gratitude towards NewJeans for respecting their vision and wearing the outfits beautifully was clearly conveyed to the audience during the performance. I hope we hear many more warm stories about hanbok like this in the future! 😊 |

Today, I’m going to share a story from one of our fanwork members, Candice, who visited the pop-up store celebrating BTS Jin's solo album release! 🎉 If you haven't been able to go, listen to Candice's review! |
I was so HAPPY🤩 I got to visit JIN’s “Happy” Pop-Up Store at the -The Hyundai Seoul- on its opening day! Securing my spot through Naver’s reservation system was smooth and free, which made the whole experience even better.🕶️ And the attempt in getting the first day was worth it! Being there at the opening felt so special, honestly. I got to see everything with fresh eyes before it hit social media. I feel there is always something magical about being part of the “first look” of events related to BTS.🔮 |
▫️Jin "Happy" Vibes Everywhere! The “Happy” Pop-Up itself was stunning! Every corner was filled with cheerful and colorful decorations that perfectly matched Jin's “Happy” concept.🐹💜 It felt like entering into a world dedicated to JIN’s bright energy. We could see him everywhere! From carefully created displays to photo spots, to the special messages from the Wotteo wall, everything was designed to bring HAPPINESS!✨ |
▫️I Loved the Small Details! Unlike most visitors, I wasn’t there for the merch, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. While the merch area was packed with other ARMYs, I had the rest of the space almost to myself! I could really take my time and explore every detail of the decorations, specially in Jin’s Office area, read all the signs and interact with the different zones in the event, check up close to his “Happy Album” paintings made by Jin himself, and just enjoy every part of it!🎨 |
▫️Messages from Fans Around the World One of my favorite parts was reading the ARMY messages on the special “Happy” Wall. We could collect three stickers through the pop-up space, in three different zones, and then we could write messages on the stickers and put it on the “Happy” Wall. It’s always so heartwarming to see how ARMY feels about Jin and BTS, no matter where they’re from.🌏 I saw sweet messages from Canada’s ARMY, Philippines’ ARMY, and Brasil’s ARMY💜 That made me feel so proud and emotional, honestly. Of course, I left my own note as well, representing Brasil’s love for JIN. Moments like this remind me of how special the ARMY community is—it’s truly a global family!🥹🍀 |
▫️What I Missed Out On… While the experience was amazing and the space was beautiful, there were some things I couldn’t participate in because I didn’t buy merchandise.💸 For example, I couldn’t use the photo booth with its special themed frame by Photoism, which felt a little disappointing. Initially I thought I could pay to take my pictures (like we normally do), but I was not even allowed to go inside the booth!😅 I also couldn’t enter the lucky draw to win photocards, which I would have loved to take part in… |
I completely understand that the main purpose of a pop-up store is to sell merch—it’s a business, after all. But it would’ve been nice if these activities could be available for all visitors, regardless of whether they made a purchase.🙌 |
